Liz Luckett

Liz Luckett

TSEF’s - The Social Entrepreneurs’ Fund – founder and managing partner Liz Luckett is the driving force behind impact investing.TSEF is different from a regular venture fund she explains in this conversation with Matthew Bishop. We look at post revenue businesses. In general business to business that create efficiencies in underserved markets by means of technology and the use of data. The focus of some of our current investments are the responsible global supply chain space, credit-scoring in East Africa, and the bail system pre-trial detention, or impact bonds. At TSEF we see our role as being pro-active in parts of the economy where there is an opportunity of social entrepreneurship and impact investing. Our mindset is to bring the parties together and keep a close track on the continued level of the positive change.

Jon Oringer

Jon Oringer

Originally a software developer in need of specific images, Jon Oringer created his own image bank, switched careers and founded Shutterstock with 30,000 of his own photographs 15 years ago. Since Shutterstock has become disruptive by opening up a platform where millions of new photographers can make a living and empower an even larger group of businesses that otherwise wouldn’t have used stock footage. We’re also single-digit years away from mobile phones replacing the SLR and mirrorless cameras in professional photography. Phones give you meta data, such as location, orientation or real-time publishing, allowing our users to get news worthy stock footage instantly. Prior to Shutterstock a small group of photographers controlled the stock image market, he explains to Matthew Bishop, yet by solving my own problem, I developed the first peer-to-peer subscription-based platform and today the industry’s most dynamic marketplace. Shutterstock has pushed the envelope with 100 million commercially released images, selling 5 images per second!

Kathryn Minshew

Kathryn Minshew

Kathryn Minshew is the CEO and co-founder of The Muse, a technology company serving 50M people aimed at helping the youth find the right meaningful job while navigating their career. She talks about the new rules of work with Matthew Bishop in this episode of Philanthrocapitalism. If you look at the debate in media and politics about the future of the workforce, there’s a growing concern about globalization and artificial intelligence. The metaphor is that you can no longer climb up the ladder within a larger firm. She explains that you have to meet this new world head-on, navigate different contacts, synthesize lots of information and develop mentoring organically. This way you can chart a course of your career that your parents have never dreamt off.

Jeremy Moon

Jeremy Moon

Trained as a cultural anthropologist Jeremy Moon is the founder of Icebreaker, the innovative company that solely uses super fine merino wool for their outdoor and sports gear regardless of weather. He discusses with Matthew how he started Icebreaker in the nineties as a new idea that was 3000 years old and re-energized an industry that was fragmented and going broke. What’s so unique is that Icebreaker starts its product at the agricultural sourcing cycle, which allows the brand to guarantee customers an ethical product. Jeremy’s also built up a sustainable supply chain with the higher margin of a luxury product. Watch Jeremy’s story how he disrupted the extreme sports market, built a company around the basics of nature, and a global brand out of New Zealand. Icebreaker gear has had a record 100 days of wearing without getting smelly!

Jeroen Wijering

Jeroen Wijering

Jeroen Wijering was a university student in the Netherlands who was dissatisfied with the ads and downloads that used to be necessary for watching videos on the internet, so he took the initiative and created his own online player. This player was built into web browsers, and allowed flash and similar applications to run online without any downloads. As the founder and creator of JW Player, Wijering arrived at the game before most people even realized it had begun. Before it was acquired by Google, all Youtube videos ran through JW Player. Today, JW Player has a team of 160 people, and is used by 2.5 million websites, ranging from small blogs to big companies like Fox, ESPN, Redbull, and Vice. They are responsible for streaming over fifteen billion videos, and have expanded from their origins as a video player to offer video hosting and transcoding capabilities, as well as data technology around analytics and digital recommendation. Emmanuel Faber

Emmanuel Faber

Emmanuel Faber is dedicated to revolutionizing the food industry in order to build a more sustainable planet, and as CEO of Danone, one of the world’s largest food companies, he is in a position to make this revolution a reality. Faber is asked how he reconciles the paradox of being a CEO of a food company advocating for major changes in the industry. He answers by explaining how he has never lost sight of his childhood growing up in a small village in the French Alps, and how he always bears in mind both the past and the frontiers ahead. Faber works to anticipate blind spots, and how this might mean overhauling the fundamentals of the food industry at large. He notes how people have never eaten as well or as much in the history of mankind as they do today, but in order to maintain and expand such a status, companies must consider externalities. The methods of standardization and globalization that are par for the course are going to have to shift towards more local-centric considerations if humanity is to survive and thrive. Read more.

Katy Sherratt

Katy Sherratt recognizes that it is reasonable to ask “Running and homelessness? How does that work?” At the same time, she notes how runners all immediately recognize the possibilities of the idea. Sherratt is the CEO of Back on My Feet, an NGO that helps homeless people get back on their feet by running. The program begins with running, but also involves community support, as well as employment and housing resources. Homeless individuals who decide to become members are given sneakers and put through a three-day-a-week running program. If they commit and stay consistent with their routine, members receive access to further resources. Read more.

Tal Keinan

Tal Keinan

Tal Keinan is a co-founder and Executive Chairman of Clarity Capital, Israel’s first full-spectrum asset management firm. Named a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum in 2010, Keinan hopes to help Israel expand its financial sector in a fashion similar to the way the country has become a tech start-up hub. He has served in different policy forums in order to achieve this goal, including the 2007 Ariav Commission, as well as serving on a Bank of Israel-finance ministry task force. Keinan points out how Israel’s material exports are minimal, but its major export is its high cost, high value talent. Therefore, he explains how the burgeoning finance sector is recruiting from the same elite Israeli military unit as the tech-world, as they are looking for a special breed of thinkers. Keinan himself was born in the US, and after getting in touch with his Jewish identity in his youth, he immigrated to Israel, where he became the first new immigrant to join the ranks of the IAF Air Crew.
