50 Cent

50 Cent. The name brings to mind an image of one of the most famed American rappers of our time. 50 Cent’s music holds heavy lyrics about life, his come-back from the brink of death, and, of course, your birthday. But his rap career and the headlines do not fully define the man. 50 Cent’s philanthropic endeavors don’t always get the same kind of press attention as his top charting hits.

Improving his own life wasn’t enough, it was important for 50 Cent to ensure that his success could be shared with those who do not have the means to help themselves. This episode uncovers the harsh reality of his childhood, tough decisions, failures and ultimate triumphs that have molded him into the famous rapper and businessman he is today. This discussion and his story provoke a movement, inspiring redemption as something that’s possible for anyone.

About 50 Cent

Born Curtis James Jackson III on July 6, 1975, and raised in Southside Jamaica, Queens, New York City, 50 Cent grew up in a broken home. His hustler mother passed away when he was only eight, and his father departed soon after, leaving his grandmother to parent him. As a teen, he followed the lead of his mother and began hustling. The crack trade proved lucrative for 50 Cent, until he eventually encountered the law, that is, and got arrested repeatedly in 1994. It's around this point in time that he traded crime for hip-hop. His break came in 1996 when he signed to JMJ Record label. Despite the next controversial few years battling record label deals and charges for aggravated assault, 50 Cent reached number one on the Billboard 200 for six weeks and was the first artist to have three singles in the top 5 of Billboard in the same week with “Candy Shop”; “Inferno Disc” and “How We Do.”

His rap career has led to a long list of awards, and he’s featured in many television series and movies. Today, 50 Cent is dedicated to philanthropic endeavors to help the youth, hungry and poverty-ridden communities through the G-Unity Foundation.
